UPROSE struggles to address local and regional inequities through education, organizing, and activism. Sunset Park and Red Hook
are home to three highways, several waste transfer stations, several power plants, a sludge treatment plant, truck traffic and
over 50,000 young people. The community has less than 1/4 of an acre of open space for every 1000 people. The New York City
Standard is 2.5 acres, which is one of the lowest metropolitan standards in the United States. Most cities require 6 to 10 acres
per 1000 people. Recent demographic studies state that close to 50% of Sunset Park is "foreign" born and 87% of the people in
Red Hook live in public housing. Sunset Park has no recreational space and does not house a solitary high school.
